About the SS James Comrie
The 73 ton James Comrie, built at Shoalhaven, NSW in 1877, was one of the first regular transport between Kangaroo Island and the mainland. Small and able, the wooden-hulled Comrie made regular shuttle trips with mail, other necessities and passengers to Penneshaw, Kingscote and the mainland and was celebrated by Islanders for climbing over waves “like an acrobat or a duck,” Comrie later became the tug boat Yulta.

The boat was named after the philanthropist James Comrie, who arrived in NSW on the 2nd June 1843 on the EMMA and initially worked at Moor’s Wharf at Millers Point, Sydney.

    This was our first time visiting KI and staying here was the perfect location and retreat to come home to of a night. Being a very high price range I would just suggest to add a few things: the pillows were all really high and no other sizes stored so we actually all had really sore necks and not the most comfortable sleep. Not being serviced- a vacuum is a must! Only one towel was left per person which is fine but maybe in the email confirmation state what is offered and not and that just helps guests pack extra towels for the beach - but again price point wise I would hope beach towels or extra would be provided. The toilet has a really cheap exposed toilet brush which I just find unhygienic and off putting - it wouldn’t cost much to buy one in a cylinder. A few little things here and there would just make it a little more luxury for the price. But it’s new - it’s a great location and beautiful views from the lounge.
